Amazon to Buy US Grocer Whole Foods Market for $13.7 Billion

The deal comes a month after Whole Foods announced a board shake-up and cost-cutting plan amid falling sales. The grocery store operator was also under pressure from activist investor Jana Partners. The grocery chain, known for its organic options, had been facing increased pressure from rivals, including European grocery chain Lidl, which is planning to enter the East Coast market, along with Aldi and Trader Joe's. Amazon, meanwhile, has been expanding its reach in goods, services, and entertainment. Whole Foods will keep operating stores under its name and John Mackey will as CEO, with headquarters in Austin, Texas. The company, founded in 1978, has struggled to differentiate itself as competitors also now offer a plethora of fresh and organic foods, and has said customers may be choosing "good enough" alternatives closer to home. In addition to other natural and organic grocers, it has cited pressure from restaurant chains, meal-delivery companies and traditional supermarkets such as Kroger. Lenovo brand Moto launched the mid-range Moto G5 Plus in March as an exclusive to Flipkart, while the Moto G5 was available only on Amazon India. It now seems like the Moto G5 Plus will also be available on Amazon India as the smartphone has been listed on the e-commerce website. The Moto G5 Plus was launched in India starting at a price Rs. 14,999 for the 3GB RAM+16GB options, and Rs. 16,999 for the 4GB RAM+32GB variant. Notably, Amazon India only lists the 32GB storage variant, while on Flipkart the 16GB variant is marked as unavailable. The smartphone is available in Gold and Lunar Grey on both the e-commerce sites. Apart from online availability, Gadgets 360 learnt earlier this month that the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus are now also available through offline retailers. To recall, the Moto G5 Plus sports a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) IPS LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It is powered by a 2GHz Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM. iPhone 8 to Feature Wireless Charging and Waterproofing, CEO of Apple Manufacturer Wistron 'Confirms'

Apple’s iPhone 8 is the most anticipated smartphone of the year, and the device has previously been rumoured to come with new AR features, OLED panel, a fast A11 chip, and wireless charging. Now CEO of an Apple manufacturer has all but confirmed the presence of waterproofing and wireless charging in Apple phones coming later this. Wistron manufactures iPhones, just like Pegatron and Foxconn, albeit in small quantities. Nikkei Asian Review reports that Wistron CEO Robert Hwang has confirmed wireless charging and waterproofing will be included in this year’s iPhone models. "Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit," Hwang reportedly told reporters after the company's annual shareholders' meeting. This is not the first time the iPhone 8 has been tipped to feature wireless charging and enhanced waterproofing capabilities. However, it is still unclear whether Apple will adopt the industry standard of Qi wireless charging, or will introduce a new innovative long-range charging that has been rumoured a couple of times in the past. There’s a recent patent that tips Apple is experimenting with wireless charging technologies that could see you charge your iPhone with a Wi-Fi router. Hwang also gave an update about the Wistron facility in India that recently starting producing the iPhone SE. Hwang says that though the company makes only "a small number" of handsets in India right now, he expects Wistron's overall smartphone business in the country to break even next year. He added that the growth of manufacturing in India will depend on the negotiations between Apple and the Indian government, but is bullish on the country. "We are being very aggressive in expanding our presence in India in addition to smartphone business," he reportedly told reporters. Purported leaked iPhone 8 renders suggest that the smartphone will sport a bezel-less display with the fingerprint scanner embedded underneath, a vertical dual camera setup, a glass back, and an elongated power button. While some reports had suggested hiccups in production could cause a delay in launch, others insist that Apple will launch the iPhone 8 in September as per tradition. Xiaomi says users will receive 10 percent of the value of transactions done on Mi.com as Mi Tokens. For example, users who purchase a Mi device worth Rs. 10,000 will get 1,000 Mi Tokens. Tokens will be credited to the user account upon successful delivery of the product. By performing other activities like sharing a product page or its review on social platforms, users can earn 5 Mi Tokens every day. Users can then redeem the Mi Tokens against their next purchase on Mi.com. Users can also redeem Mi Tokens to get F-codes, which is a priority code that will let users add a Mi product to their shopping cart even when it is not in stock for other customers. The Mi Tokens can also be redeemed for Discount Coupons which will help users get a discount on a product being sold via Mi.com. Detailed terms and conditions are available on the Xiaomi website. In case you’re wondering which Pokemon game is going to be developed for the Nintendo Switch, it’s likely to be Pokemon Stars. The final name of the game may vary as the codename for the game under development is Pokemon Stars. Another distinction is that the LG G6 has passed the MIL-STD 810G military standard certification for durability.

Teardown experts play spot-the-difference with new MacBooks and last year’s models

Refreshed notebooks are ‘largely identical’ to their predecessors The teardown experts over at iFixit have got their hands (not to mention Torx screwdrivers) on Apple’s refreshed MacBook and MacBook Pro which were recently unveiled, and have reported back that there are hardly any changes inside these new models. On paper, the new versions of Apple’s laptops were only a minor spec bump anyway – introducing Kaby Lake processors was the biggest move, alongside some more minor storage and memory upgrades – but it’s still quite surprising just how little the hardware internals have changed. When iFixit took these machines apart, the website found that they were ‘largely identical’ to their predecessors, with just very slight tweaks like the color of the fans. The only real notable change was that the MacBook 2017 has been given a keyboard revamp with the introduction of the improved second-gen ‘butterfly’ switches that Apple brought in with the MacBook Pro 2016.

Butterfly effect

Apparently these switches have been further honed for both machines this time around, and according to iFixit: “The keyboard trigger looks like a more classic switch this go-around. The plastic butterfly mechanism appears to have thinned out to accommodate the new switch form factor.” The website speculates that this could possibly be a change to boost durability levels, as the actual typing action of the keys feels much the same as the MacBook Pro 2016. For many, the real question with this new keyboard configuration will doubtless be whether it solves some of the issues that were reported with last year’s MacBook Pro keyboard, including a non-uniform feel across the keys, and keys which make a loud clicking sound when the laptop gets warmer. If these sort of problems are still in evidence, then the refreshed keyboard may not be such a great upgrade for the MacBook 2017. iFixit further noted that the Touch Bar of the new MacBook Pro still remains “difficult to replace”, and with all of the core components – processor, RAM, storage – soldered to the logic board, and the battery glued solidly into the case, it’s a very unfriendly machine to repair. It’s the same story with the MacBook 2017 with the soldered core components and liberal use of glue on the battery. Both laptops received a rather woeful 1/10 repairability score from iFixit, although that’s nothing new for Apple’s notebooks. Bear in mind that if you are concerned about buying a MacBook and having something go wrong with the device, Apple has just started to offer AppleCare+ insurance with its notebooks.

Jio vs Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea as IMG Panel Looks Into Telecom Sector's Woes

New and old telecom operators were again at each other's throats on Monday with Reliance Jio accusing incumbents of milking the sector using borrowed money while the older players blamed free voice and data offering by the Mukesh Ambani firm for financial woes of the sector. As an inter-ministerial group (IMG) began hearing operators on reasons for telecom sector being dragged towards loan defaults, Jio launched a scathing attack on Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular accusing them of cartelisation and blaming financial woes on their reluctance to use equity for investing into new technology. While the 'big three' will make presentations to the IMG on June 16, Reliance Communications has said that FY17 was the first time since inception that the industry's revenue and operating profits declined, primarily because they were forced to match free offerings of the newcomer with deep pockets. Jio, on the other hand, blamed the incumbents for the financial woes saying they stretched the balance sheets through extensive borrowings without bringing in any equity money. While the Mukesh Ambani-owned firm blamed availability of easy credit to buy spectrum for worsening the situation, other operators said reduced cash flows were hampering capacity of telecom companies. Jio, run by India's richest man, said that the incumbents need to infuse Rs. 1 lakh crore to Rs. 1.25 lakh crore immediately, as well as spectrum liabilities need to be paid upfront instead of deferred payment route. RCom's policy prescription to the government included reduction in licence fee to five percent and one percent flat spectrum usage levy along with a three-year moratorium on these payments. The debt-ridden RCom - which recently got a seven-month reprieve from lenders to service its huge debt - also wants the period of repayment for deferred spectrum charges to be extended to 20 years which is the life of the spectrum. PTI sources in Telecom Department said the IMG will meet banks including SBI, PNB, Axis Bank and HDFC on June 14 to discuss the telecom industry's financial difficulties. Telecom PSUs Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd will be meeting the IMG on Tuesday, while Airtel, Vodafone and Idea are slated to make presentations before the government panel on June 16.

Xiaomi launched its first laptop in July last year, the Mi Notebook Air. Seen as a direct competition to Apple's MacBook Air, the Mi Notebook has now been refreshed with some performance upgrades, which now see Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors inside three new 13.3-inch variants. The new Mi Notebook Air with 13.3-inch display now comes with a seventh generation Intel Core i7 processors for the top-end variant with clock speed peaking at 3.0GHz, while the two other variants get a seventh-gen Intel Core i5 chip. This is said to boost performance by up to 10 percent over the previous version. Meanwhile, the 12.5-inch model now gets a seventh-gen Intel Core M3 processor, which boats a 12 percent performance improvement over its predecessor. All of these models also carry forward the support for 4G LTE modems announced in December last year. Notably, the new Mi Notebook Air now gets a fingerprint sensor on the top right corner of the trackpad, which can be used to unlock the notebook, and as an added security feature for when you make online payments, for example. Rest of the specifications have been untouched. The 13.3-inch Mi Notebook Air claims a battery life of up to 9.5 hours, while the 12.5-inch model promises to deliver up to 11.5 hours of battery life on a single charge. Memory is at 8GB of DDR4 RAM for all three 13.3-inch Mi Notebook Air variants, which will be offered along with 128GB or 256GB PCIe SSD storage. Graphics also get a boost with Nvidia GeForce MX150 graphics card with 2GB GDDR5 memory. The new graphics chip is tuned to deliver up to three times better performance-per-watt when compared to the previous 940MX GPU. The starting price of the new 13.3-inch Mi Notebook Air remains the same at CNY 4,999 (roughly Rs. 51,400) for the seventh-gen Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM and 128GB PCIe storage variant. Meanwhile, the 256GB PCIe storage variant is priced at CNY 5,499 (roughly Rs. 52,100) and will be available starting June 18 on mi.com. Price and availability for the top-of-the-line model with seventh-gen Intel Core i7, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB PCIe storage have not been revealed yet.

Here’s the biggest stuff from the PlayStation presser. The new God of War is a father-son story One of the most highly-awaited titles, the next God of War – simply titled eponymously – is a bit of a soft reboot and shifts to the Norse mythology. That doesn’t mean your favourite Greek myth hero, Kratos, is going anywhere though. This time, his son Atreus is with him for the ride as Kratos takes on an assortment of monster creatures. In between, you’ll have cut scenes featuring Atreus’ mother. While you’ll play as Kratos throughout the game, you’ll be able to passively control Atreus with a dedicated button. The trailer focused on the father-son relationship, with Kratos teaching him how to survive and become a warrior. God of War will be a PS4-exclusive title, coming early 2018. It’ll be a single-player-only title, and is inspired by RPGs.

We know a new PS4-exclusive Spider-Man game has been on its way, and we got the first extended look at some gameplay during the PlayStation E3 2017 event. The game will allow you to play stealthily at times, and very hands-on as the need arises. Wilson Fisk, who some of you might know from Netflix’s Daredevil, seems to be a minor villain in the game. The trailer showed us that Insomniac Games have spent time in understanding the insane capabilities of Spidey’s agility and web strength, which allows for some crazy and unique stunts, as witnessed from the helicopter balancing act in the trailer. There was even a sneak mention of Miles Morales towards the end of the event, which is a good progressive step identity-wise that Marvel’s film efforts should take notes from. Spider-Man doesn’t have a defined release date, just 2018 at this point.

 

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is set in India After an announcement back in December as a standalone chapter, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy claimed the opening slot at the PlayStation E3 event, in the form of a live Indian classical music performance followed by a trailer that showed gameplay, story, characters, and its lush tropical setting: India. Based on characters present in Uncharted 4 – Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross – players will search for the tusk of Ganesh in the new game. Hopefully, the game will give a nuanced portrayal of its setting, and stay away from any stereotypes. We’ll find out when it arrives August 22.
 

Destiny 2 moved up to September 6

Although Bungie held an extensive reveal in May, Destiny 2 was still present at the PlayStation E3 2017 event. We didn’t get a lot in the way of gameplay, but instead a bigger focus on what will be the game’s primary antagonist at launch: Dominus Ghaul, the leader of the Red Legion. Of course, the bigger reason for Sony was to show off its continued exclusivity deal with Bungie, which will give the PS4 access to exclusive weapons, gear, strikes, and a map. And if you’re dying to play it, you’ll be happy to know Destiny 2 arrives two days earlier on September 6 for consoles. It’ll make it to PCs October 24.

Uber SVP Michael Out, CEO Travis Kalanick Could Take a Leave of Absence

A key Uber executive left the company Monday as the ridesharing giant prepared to release results of a far-reaching independent inquiry into misconduct and ethical practices. A source familiar with the matter said Emil Michael, a senior vice president reported to be close to chief executive Travis Kalanick, was out at Uber, without providing details. Uber was bracing for more turmoil - with some news outlets saying Kalanick himself may take a leave of absence - as a report prepared by former US attorney general Eric Holder was to be given to employees Tuesday. Uber's board met Sunday with Holder and consultant Tammy Albarran to discuss the findings and "unanimously voted to adopt all the recommendations" of the report, according to the source. The recommendations were not immediately known, but Uber is facing pressure to rein in its no-holds-barred management style led by Kalanick and to reform a workplace culture criticized for discrimination and cutthroat practices. Uber also faces questions about its covert use of law enforcement-evading software and tactics apparently aimed at disrupting rivals in the ridesharing business. As part of the revamping at Uber, Nestle executive Wan Ling Martello was named as an independent board member, according to the source close to the company. Michael had been linked to a number of questionable practices at Uber, media reports said, including a visit to a South Korean escort-karaoke bar and an attempt to dig up embarrassing information on journalists. An email from Michael announcing his departure said he would be replaced by another vice president, David Richter, according to The New York Times, which first reported Michael's departure.

Moment of truth

It remained unclear what further changes will be made at Uber, which is the world's richest venture-backed startup valued at some $68 billion (roughly Rs. 4,38,485 crores). "It's safe to say that this week will be the week we finally learn just how committed Travis Kalanick and the rest of the senior leadership team at Uber is to meaningful cultural change," said Jan Dawson, an analyst with Jackdaw Research. The report comes after a series of embarrassing revelations for the company over the past few months. Last week, Uber said it had fired 20 people following preliminary results of the investigation, after examining 215 claims of discrimination, harassment, unprofessional behavior, bullying, retaliation and "physical security." The company also ousted Eric Alexander, who headed Asia-Pacific operations, after reports said he read and discussed medical information about a woman raped in India in 2014 during an Uber ride. Last month, Uber fired executive Anthony Levandowski, who came from Google's self-driving car unit now known as Waymo, for failing to meet a deadline to turn over information for an internal investigation. Waymo's lawsuit contends that Levandowski in December 2015 downloaded files from a highly confidential design server to a laptop and took the data with him to the startup. Top engineering executive Amit Singhal resigned in February after the ride-sharing titan learned he ended his career at Google after a sexual harassment complaint, reports said. In March, Uber's president Jeff Jones resigned after just six months. The woes so far have not hit Uber's growth trajectory, but some analysts say its problems won't fixed without a change in leadership. Uber does not file full financial reports but indicated its bookings last year doubled to $20 billion, with net revenue totaling $6.5 billion and an adjusted net loss of $2.8 billion not counting China operations that it sold. Trip Chowdhry, analyst at Global Equities Research, said Uber is not on the verge of collapse but "they have to reinvent themselves" and "the valuation will be reset." "They have no focus, no strategy - they're like rabbits running to the left and to the right with no direction," Chowdhry said.

What makes a good Kindle deal?

For the tablets, the best thing to do is just work out how much you want to spend and pick up the model that sits closest to your budget. The HDX models are the good ones so do go for one of those if you can.

What do 'Special Offers' mean on the Kindle listings?

When looking at a Kindle e-reader listing, whether it's on Amazon's website, or on a different retailer's site, you'll often see 'includes special offers' in the title or item description. Choose without special offers and the price will jump up £10/$20. Essentially, these Special Offers act as Amazon-based screensaver-style advertisements on your Kindle device. So when you pop your Kindle on from sleep mode you'll see an ad for a book on Amazon's Kindle store, or maybe a third party ad. Annoying right? Actually, I opted for with Special Offers (I do love a cheap deal), and it's not bothered me one bit. You can swipe the ad away easily (no trying to find the tiny X icon here) and get on with your reading straight away. When in sleep mode, the ads cycle on the screen, but they're not illuminated and they don't seem to consume any power. They don't slow anything down when powering on the device after shutdown either. Seeing as they don't interfere with the experience at all, I'm glad I didn't spend the extra £10 to block them. Hey, some of them (sales ads etc) have been worth clicking through to. If you really don't like them though, you can always pay the difference at a later date to get them removed. So we'd opt for the cheaper 'includes special offers' option first.

Asus, alongside the launch of the ZenFone Pegasus 3S in China, announced the pricing of the ZenFone 3 Zoom - at least, partially. To recall, the ZenFone 3 Zoom was launched at CES 2017 last week, but at the point the company had only detailed a February release date.
The Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom price is CNY 3,699 (roughly Rs. 36,400) - specifically, for the top-end 128GB inbuilt storage variant that also sports 4GB of RAM. Price details of cheaper SKUs were not revealed by the company. As we mentioned, the company made the price announcement at the China launch event of the Asus ZenFone Pegasus 3S IT168 reports.

The ZenFone 3 Zoom is called the "thinnest and lightest" smartphone featuring a 5000mAh battery by Asus. The smartphone is 7.9mm thick, and weighs 170 grams. It sports a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor.
The camera-focused smartphone bears a dual rear camera setup, with one 12-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX362 sensor and an f/1.7 aperture, and the other 12-megapixel rear camera featuring 2.3x optical zoom - allowing for a total 12x zoom. Like the Asus ZenFone AR, it features a TriTech+ autofocus system, dual-PDAF, 4-axis OIS, and 3-axis EIS. Apple to Launch 3 iPad Models in Q2 2017; No New iPad mini: Report

A new report by KGI Securities’ analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, claims Apple will be launching three new tablets in the second quarter of 2017.
Significantly, the note to investors contains no mention of the iPad mini, leading one to believe that Apple is either killing the lineup or will have a new model to unveil later this year
. Kuo has an excellent track record for predicting Apple plans, based on supplier information. The analyst claims that the Cupertino giant will launch an updated version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, while also introducing a new iPad Pro model with a new design featuring narrow bezels and a screen size between 10 and 10.5 inches. Alongside, Apple is also tipped to launch a more affordable 9.7-inch iPad that will be the “low-priced option” in its lineup.
The new 12.9-inch and 10-10.5-inch iPad Pro are said to ship with an Apple A10X SoC - an upgraded version of the Apple A10 SoC found in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus - made by TSMC. As for the new, low-priced 9.7-inch iPad, Apple will reportedly use the Apple A9 SoC that was used in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and will be made by Samsung. The analyst adds that a 10 percent drop in shipments can be expected this year, down to 35-37 million units, but that would still be less than what the company experienced in 2016 - where it saw a 20 percent fall year-on-year. The reason for the smaller drop in shipments, Kuo claims, is that the 10-10.5-inch iPad Pro is expected to see substantial demand from the enterprise demographic, while the 9.7-inch offering should see good demand - and is expected to account for 50-60 percent of the shipments. Apple can also be expected to generate good revenues from its tablet range in part due to a “a better ASP thanks to improved product mix on decreasing exposure to iPad mini will likely offset the shipment decline.” To recall, Apple launched the 9.7-inch iPad Pro back in March last year, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and iPad mini 4 in September 2015. The company was expected to refresh its iPad lineup at its September launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, however, that did not happen.
